STAGE ONE

STAGE 1 - PHOTOGRAPHIC SUBMISSION

Please ensure you submit your styles according to the competition you qualify to enter

Main Competition Entry (18 years and older practicing stylist): Commercial Day Style and Evening Elegance Style YoungXpert Category (student’s stylists, not younger than 16 years old): Street Chic Style and Urban Fantasy Style

bluegirl2We will be rewarding Salon Owners for supporting their Stylists and Sofn’free HairXperts. Should your Stylist be one of the Grand Final winners, you will receive equal to 10% of your Stylist’s prize in stock. The Salon Name and Owner ID number presented on this registration form will be the only details deemed valid. Entry Criteria; Terms and Conditions apply.

Deadline for submission of entries: KZN, Johannesburg, North West, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State, Limpopo & Mpumalanga Entries Closed. Other Provinces still open. These are the closing dates for remaining Provinces 1) North Gauteng (Pretoria, Hammanskraal, etc) – 3 November

Entry into Main Competition

Attach two photographs of hairstyles that you have created according to the following themes:

Practicing stylists selected will need to prepare to compete in the next stage of the competition, Regional Preliminary Competitions. These will commence 14 days after the closing date. All Semi-finalists will be contacted telephonically with further details of the competition. The following is a brief overview of the final 3 stages of the competition:

STAGE TWO

STAGE 2 - REGIONAL COMPETITIONS

Ten semi-finalists from selected regions will be chosen from the Photographic Submissions to compete in Regional Styling Competitions. Based on the judge’s scoring, two hairstylists from each Regional Competition will be selected to represent their region in the Style-Off Challenges. Judging will take place while stylists are working and they will be on the lookout for clean and professionally finished work, and trendsetting potential in styling as well as creativity and originality. Judging will be based on the internationally recognised 30-point system.

Contestants will have 90 minutes to create two styles in the following categories:

Progressive Cut and Style

  • Contestants will have 45 minutes to create a fashion style, with significant points allocated to cutting techniques.
  • Natural hair must be pre-relaxed and quality of relaxed hair is key.
  • Styling techniques and overall finished look will be taken into account.
  • Colour is permitted and must be pre-applied if desired. No neon shades.
  • No avant-garde or fantasy styles will be permitted.
  • Only one ornament or hairpiece may be used and may not cover more than one third of the style.
  • Hairpieces may be pre-prepared, but must be applied on-stage.

Bridal Beauty

  • Contestants will have 45 minutes to create a bridal style, with significant points allocated to styling techniques, balance and form.
  • Natural hair must be pre-relaxed and quality of relaxed hair is key.
  • Colour is permitted and must be pre-applied if desired. No neon shades.
  • No avant-garde or fantasy styles will be permitted.
  • Only one ornament or hairpiece may be used and may not cover more than one third of the style. Hair pieces may be pre-prepared but must be applied on-stage.
  • Judges will be on the lookout for an elegant, professional overall finished look.

Models

  • Models must be provided by the stylist and any costs incurred will be for the stylists own account.
  • Models and stylists will be required to sign a release form in regards to their images, as stated in point 7 of the Terms and Conditions of the competition.
  • Points will be awarded only for hairdressing skills, and not for the dress and appearance of the model, however a neat appearance would contribute to the overall impression.
  • All models must be 18 years of age and older

Equipment

  • Only Sofn’free products may be used.
  • Stylists must provide their own equipment and extras, including scissors, dryers, tongs, plugs, adapters, etc.
  • No hood dryers will be available during the Regional Competitions.
  • See point 16 of the Terms and Conditions for regulations regarding equipment use.

Refreshments

Refreshments will be on sale from selected vendors at the venue.

Regional Competitions closed in December 2016.

STAGE THREE

STAGE 3 - STYLE-OFF CHALLENGES

Based on the judge’s scoring, winning stylists from each Regional Competition will be selected to represent their region in the Style-Off Challenges in Johannesburg for a full week.

Contestants will be required to tackle 8 different hairdressing challenges and the stylist/s with the lowest score will be sent home each day, leaving 8 Practicing stylists to progress to the Grand Final.

  • The challenges may be filmed and stylists should be prepared to participate in live shows.
  • Contestants will be fully briefed on arrival at the venue and must be prepared to work on site for 8 consecutive days.
  • Coach transport, accommodation, Sofn’free products and hair models will be supplied by Sofn’free. Stylists must provide their own hairdressing equipment.
  • Challenges will be judged according to international hairdressing rules.

STAGE FOUR

STAGE 4 - GRAND FINAL

The remaining 8 practicing stylist finalists will compete on stage at a live event for the coveted respective titles of Sofn’free HairXpert Master in 2017.

Judging Criteria

20% of points will be generated by your performances during the Style-off Challenges. Judging will be carried out by a panel of judges, consisting predominantly of recognised hair industry experts. The internationally recognised 30-point judging system will be in place. Prior to the live show, judges will conduct a pre-judging session to enable them to get a close-up view of the styles. 65% of the points will be determined during this pre-judging session. The judges’ decisions are final. Contestants will be fully briefed on the competition process closer to the time.

The techniques used to create the style, creative and professional use of colour and professional finish and neatness will be considered during the judging process. Trendsetting potential of styles will also be considered.

One finished style is to be presented on stage in each of the following categories:

For the Main Competition (Applicable to practicing stylists only):

Bridal Fantasy

  • Contestants must create a bridal style, with significant points allocated to styling techniques, balance, form and movement.
  • Natural hair must be pre-relaxed and quality of relaxed hair is key.
  • Colour is permitted and must be pre-applied if desired. No neon shades.
  • Only one ornament or hairpiece may be used and may not cover more than one third of the style.
  • Hairpieces may be pre-prepared but only attached during the competition.
  • Skill in blending with own hair will be taken into consideration.
  • Judges will be on the lookout for an elegant, professional overall finished look as well as the level of hairdressing skill shown in creating the look.

Models:

  • Finalists must provide their own models (they must meet the criteria set out by Sofn’free).
  • If a finalist lives outside a 200km radius of the city in which the Grand Final is being held coach transport and accommodation will be provided for two models.
  • Models and stylists will be required to sign a release form regarding their images as stated in point 7 of the Terms and Conditions of the competition.
  • All models must be 18 years of age and older.

Avant-Garde

  • Contestants must create an Avant-Garde style, with significant points allocated to styling techniques, balance, form and movement.
  • Natural hair must be pre-relaxed and quality of relaxed hair is key.
  • Colour is permitted and must be pre-applied if desired.
  • Hairpieces may be pre-prepared but the style may not consist of previously prepared hairpieces simply clipped on. They may only be attached during the competition and skill in blending with own hair will be taken into consideration.
  • Judges will be on the lookout for an elegant, professional overall finished look as well as the level of creativity and hairdressing skill shown in creating the look.

Finished styles, overall look and stage presentation will contribute 15% to final score

General Information

  • Sofn’free has the right to determine new or change the finalists stage presentations, theme and music should it be deemed that it is inappropriate or does not flow with the overall theme of the final show. Consultation and guidance with the finalists well in advance of the final show will be in place.
  • Only Sofn’free products may be used.
  • Only finalists and two models may be allowed in the dressing room area.
  • No family, friends, assistants, photographers or make-up artists.
  • Only finalists and two models will gain access to the event. Additional staff, photographers, partners, family, friends, etc. must purchase tickets to the event.
  • Finalists must provide all the appropriate clothing, costumes, accessories, specialised make-up, equipment and props. Make-up artists will be provided by Sofn’free.
  • If a finalist lives outside a 200km radius of the city in which the Finals are being held, coach transport and accommodation will be provided for the finalist.

Stage Presentation

Stylists can be as creative as they want within the following parameters:

  • Stylists will be expected to appear on stage with their models.
  • Stylist’s presentation of both styles may not exceed three minutes.
  • The overall height of models, including hairpieces and high-heeled shoes, may not be more than 2.5m.
  • Only the stylist and two models may appear on stage, no additional people.
  • A maximum of two easily manageable props, that the stylist or models can carry with them onto stage may be used.
  • No live props are allowed.
